Juan Carlos Rodriguez, M.D.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez, M.D. With a patient-centered approach, Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez treats children and adults with back problems, specializing in scoliosis cases. By educating and collaborating with the patients, their families and the primary care physicians, Dr. Rodriguez formulates treatment plans, taking into consideration the patients' unique history and long-term goals. In addition to the clinical goals, improvement of function in daily activities and the appearance of the patient are considered in each case.

Trained in complex spine surgery and mini-invasive approaches practicing spinal orthopedic surgery for the past eleven years, Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez Olaverri treats pediatric and adult patients with pain or back deformities (including those suffering from scoliosis, kyphosis and kyphoscoliosis).

Dr. Rodriguez graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Universidad Complutense, receiving his PhD, and from the Universidad de Salamanca, receiving his Doctor of Medicine. He completed his Internship and Residency in the Ponce District Hospital and the Hospital Clinico San Carlos, respectively, followed by a Spine Fellowship at the NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Dr. Rodriguez has numerous publications, presentations, exhibits and academic posters to his credit dealing with the spine and spine surgery, as well as several honors and awards in this area. The doctor sympathizes with people who are born with or develop deformities because of genetic or other causes. "The transformation as a result of the surgery changes a patient's life; it changes his socioeconomic status by enabling him to fit in with everyone else instead of being 'different.'"

Dr. Rodriguez at first recommends medication and physical therapy to relieve pain. If the symptoms and pain worsen or if the patient has problems with balance, movement, inability to walk, or numbness, then the doctor recommends surgical procedures to treat the damaged discs in the neck or spine.

To help patients suffering from scoliosis, Dr. Rodriguez designed specialized screws used to increase reduction during deformity surgery. The doctor, via minimally invasive surgery, inserts bone grafts (small pieces of bone from the patient's hip or a bone bank) into the spaces between the vertebrae. Over time, the bones fuse to prevent the progression of the curve.

Dr. Rodriguez has donated much of his time to goodwill causes, operating on complex spinal deformities in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
